Saskatoon Farmers’ Market at Riverlanding
This Spring I travelled back to Saskatchewan with my Father and had the opportunity to stop in at the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market (housed in a renovated former city electrical garage). I still find it remarkable that Victoria lacks a permanent public market downtown and I mentioned in an earlier post that other cities of similar size manage to support year-round public marketplaces (Victoria has some great markets but they only open on Saturdays or Sundays during the summer).
The Saskatoon Farmers’ Market is a full market three days per week over the summer and it continues twice weekly through the winter. It is home to five small businesses (Giuseppi’s, Riverbend Plantation, Garlic Guru, Little Market Store, and Cava Cuisine) that are open five days per week year round. The marketplace also provides a home to ideas inc, a public organization that provides mentoring of new businesses in the city.
Feeling inspired? Fortunately, you can support the dream of a permanent downtown public market for Victoria:
EAT HERE NOW 2011
11-4PM SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 | CENTENNIAL SQUARE | VICTORIA BC
Come join us! The Eat Here Now 2011 Local Food Harvest Festival is an event organized by the Victoria Downtown Public Market Society in support of the re-establishment of a year-round, indoor local food-centered public market for downtown Victoria. We believe that the return of a permanent public market downtown is vital for a healthy local food system and community. Such a market will improve the island’s food security by increasing accessibility to island grown products during every season, helping local farms remain vibrant and sustainable. Additionally, a downtown local food market will promote and support local businesses and bring neighbors together to commune and share resources, and provide a hub of food-related community education, commerce and creativity.
Eat Here Now is a FREE, family-friendly festival taking place from 11am – 4pm on Sunday September 11th in Spirit (Centennial) Square featuring some of the best farmers, fishers, butchers, bakers, processors, vintners, brewers, coffee roasters and restaurants in the region. To celebrate the craft of our food producers there will be live music from local musicians and DJs; the regions largest farmers’ market; a corn boil sponsored by Silver Rill Corn; a wild salmon roast by the Island Chef’s Collaborative and the BC Salmon Council; beer, wine, cider and mead tastings; and local restaurants demonstrating how they make the best use of regional produce and value-added food products.
